2. This could become a metaphore

Yes, he's been an advocate for decades. The problem is that it has been getting worse for those decades and his positions haven't necessarily "kept up". The result is that this could become a metaphor for the idea that time has passed him by and it is time for a new generation, that is current, to take over. Politics isn't so much (as HRC kinds showed) about actually having the correct policies as much as it is about convincing people that you know enough to develop them. "Standing his ground" may not be his winning strategy.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for: Undecided
