After all, our immigration is capped at 250,000/yr - a certain percentage of which (I think it's 10% but don't quote me) is slotted for Americans. (I arrived in 2002) But you will lose your best and brightest, about 25 thousand of them a year - those who are, as you mentioned "young, intelligent, and well-educated," and you left out gay, but, you will also lose those whose skills are in the most demand here - doctors, engineers, scientists etc...
There are though a great many who will not go largely, and I think this is tooo funny, because it's cold. There are actually Americans, and I've talked to them who say, sure the US is "in constant war, becoming more religiously repressive, and bankrupt," and Canada is "only a few miles away, is tolerant, is peaceful, and has sound social policies that actually help the people" but it's cold, so I'm not going. Canada is a huge country, bigger than the US, bigger than any country but Russia and yes, if you get in the far north, near the artic circle there are inhumanly cold, actually dangerous winters (and even summers at times), but if you look at Toronto (where half of all immigrants come when they first arrive) and draw a straight line from Toronto across to Europe you will find yourself somewhere in France. Did you ever here someone say "oh I'd love to go to France but it's too cold there". Toronto does get winter, we get ice and snow and all that but really - you get yourself a pair of gloves and a good winter coat and you suck it up. Too funny, I think that's just one of our preliminary immigration tests.
