Zell Miller To Head To Lawfirm

Retiring Senator Zell Miller, a teacher not a lawyer, will join the government affairs practice of one of his home state's major law firms when he leaves his Senate position early next year.

According to a statement from the firm, his employer to be, McKenna Long And Aldridge, provides expertise to clients in such areas as tax policy, international trade, homeland security, health policy and higher education.

Miller will work from the firm's Washington and Atlanta offices.

He had a hard time today describing exactly what his duties will be. Miller said -- quote -- "I haven't been able to talk to anybody very concretely because of the rules of the Senate."

But, he insisted, one thing he won't be is a lobbyist.

Miller said -- quote -- "I'm not going to be walking any halls of the Capitol or taking any folks out for a steak dinner."

I had not realized he was not elected to the Senate at all.

I can't do much history here, but I moved to Ga. in July of 2000. I voted for Zell in Nov. BECAUSE he wa the Dem on the ticket. I haden't been here long enough to know Ga politics, but I'd bet my vote would have been the same. All the Dems I've met since said Zell changed when he went to Wash. They all detest him, as do I.

In January 1998, then-Gov. Zell Miller went to the Georgia Legislature armed with a tape player and a new idea.

Miller told lawmakers he wanted $105,000 to pay for a CD of classical music that would be distributed to parents of newborns across Georgia. Miller cited early childhood research touting the benefits of music in developing babies' brains and the link between music and math.

To hit home his point, Miller pulled out his tape player and let lawmakers listen to a few minutes of Beethoven's "Ode to Joy."

"Now don't you feel smarter already? Smart enough to vote for this budget item, I hope," Miller told them.
