North Korea says it is willing to abandon nuclear ambitions for a price, as California congressman visits

North Korea said Saturday it was willing to abandon its nuclear weapons programs, but it demanded a change in American policy as a California congressman critical of the communist state's human rights records visited Pyongyang.

The statement, which echoed the North's earlier stance, appeared to be timed for a visit by Rep. Tom Lantos, the ranking Democrat on the House International Relations Committee.

It also came a day after U.S. officials said one of Washington's harshest critics of North Korea, Undersecretary of State John Bolton, will resign his post.

"Our consistent stance is to denuclearize the Korean peninsula and resolve the problem through dialogue," said a spokesman of North Korea's Foreign Ministry. "If the United States really wants to resolve the nuclear problem through dialogue, it should show through action that it is giving up a hostile policy aimed at toppling our system, and take the road toward coexistence."

6. i really don't care that NK is...

an untrustworthy Stalinist regime...they don't bother us, they don't invade other counties...let their people deal with the totalitarian shithole that the country is right now....

that being said, if Kim says that a pledge of non-aggression from the United States would end their nuclear ambitions, why not try it? If it's found that he continues after such a pledge, the United States would have ample legal ground to break the treaty (since the North Koreans had not honored it). That's the worst case scenario.

The best case scenario is that it works, and North Korea and South Korea can renew their reunification talks (which were under way under Clinton).

Why is the Bush administration so damn adamant on acting like assholes with North Korea?

Here you have a country who's leaders are starving and murdering their people all so that a few of them can live in luxury.

On the other hand, Chicken Shit King George is a coward and will not go after North Korea because he's afraid they could kick our ass.

The way things are right now, they probably could kick our ass. Except if we vaporize them.
