PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Scandal-scarred former police commissioner Bernard Kerik told corrections convention-goers to ignore critics and go their own way if they want to succeed.
"Take the challenge. Ignore the critics. Ignore the press," he told about 600 people at the winter conference of the American Correctional Association. "Don't cower to criticism. Good will prevail over evil."
Moments later, he took his own advice and declined after his half-hour speech to discuss such boiling topics as whether he lied in court about his relationship with a Correction Department underling, and why he intervened while correction commissioner for a city contractor under investigation.

"As you know I withdrew my name from nomination for secretary of homeland security," he said. "I've had 40 or 50 people come up to me in the last 24 hours to say, 'Why?' Not 'why did you withdraw,'
'what made you want to accept a job in the public sector?' Keep in mind you're all in public service ... You do it because it's the right thing to do."
