Alaska senators back Democrats' overtime effort

FAIRBANKS -- Both of Alaska's senators backed a move that could derail Bush administration plans to revamp overtime rules.

Sens. Ted Stevens and Lisa Murkowski were among only six GOP lawmakers to support a Democratic amendment that would prohibit the administration from spending money on its proposed new overtime rules.

The amendment, by Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, was tacked onto the annual Labor Department spending bill. It was approved 54-45.

"This is the single most vocalized issue we've heard about since the senator has been in office," said Murkowski spokeswoman Kristin Pugh.

2. Even the GOP senators up here are more like Independants...

Alaska is a great place to live..Yea our Govt is Replublican but not in the same way as it is looked at in the lower 48..We are Fiercely independant people who believe in right and wrong and accountability, regardless of party affiliation. Ted Stevens is one of the most vocal opponents to the Patriot Act as well..Of course he is still Repub. and is for MANY other things that the more liberal are highly agaist but ya can't have everything...We ARE one of a kind up here in the Great state though!
