Authorities did not know how much oil had poured into the river, but television video showed a miles-long slick along the river, a tributary of the Ohio River.
"Right now, it's just the Kentucky River that is affected," said Stacy Floden, a spokeswoman for Kentucky Emergency Management.
Owen County Sheriff Zemer Hammond said the pipeline was shut off and environmental officials were on the scene. He said there had been no injuries or evacuations.
