(Georgia) Senate approves 'Choose Life' tags - - - WTF!
Senate approves 'Choose Life' tags

Sen. Jeff Mullis (R-Chickamauga) successfully urged his colleagues to pass a bill authorizing the state motor vehicles department to offer a license plate with the anti-abortion message.

<SNIP>

Mullis and other Republicans resisted an attempt by some Democrats to amend the bill by adding a "Pro Family, Pro-Choice," plate as an option for motorists.

<SNIP>

Sen. David Adelman (D-Atlanta) unsuccessfully argued that denying the abortion rights plate, while approving the anti-abortion plate, amounted to a violation of First Amendment rights to freedom of expression. "Let's stay out of the courts," said Sen. Gloria Butler (D-Stone Mountain). "Because if you pass one and don't pass the other, we're going to court. Let's let both sides have their say."

Sen. Ralph Hudgens (R-Comer), noting that the state has wildlife support license plates, asked Adelman if that means legislators would also have to provide plates reading "I support raping and pillaging the environment."

5. Pro-life and Pro-choice are political stances.
If enough people want to drive around with a plate that says "I rape and pillage the environment" then yeah...although it'd be a little redundant, as all the evidence is there with the giant rolling living room SUVs that are out there guzzling gas and all that.

32. The ammendment proposed
would have also, silmultaneously, created a "Georgians for Choice" plate . . .

There are currently law suits in five states about this issue - only allowing one side of a political "issue" to voice an opinion on a license plate. Georgia will be the sixth.

It really should have been an argument about first ammendment rights, but it turned into a debate about abortion - which doesn't go anywhere.

46. Perhaps These Tags Appear To Consider Choice, But
the moneys from them go in part to 'pro-adoption' groups with a decidenly anti-choice agenda. Just look up the FL Choose Life tag site (yep, they have a site) and you'll see all these testimonies from tag owners on how they are assuring that Christian babies are being saved from abortion by the viewing of these plates. Blarf! They also sell all sorts of 'pro-life' products so that the agenda can be pushed further.

I'm currently making up a 'vanity plate' that resembles the Lifer tag, except that the two faces are those of smiling women, the red letters read 'CHOICE' and the black ones read 'IM4IT'. Not sure if I want 'FLORIDA' or 'For Every Woman' underneath.

First the 24 hour abortion waiting period and now this. This is proof that our stat government has been completely taken over by the Republicaban.

It was just a few years ago that we had Roy Barnes as governor and Tom Murphy as house speaker and we were one of the most progressive southern states.

Ralph Hudgens is a total ass. His district is right next to the district where I live.
And yes, the republicans do support "raping and pillaging the environment."
I hope someone takes them to court on this issue.

Unfortunately, neither, John nor Cynthia are in my district. They've split Athens off form our district and put all of us liberlas, blacks, hispanics and other poor folks in w/ RW rural counties.

That is the worst ear worm in the history of music.

I once read a news article about a guy that was pinned, helpless, underneath his wrecked car for something like two days before someone found him. In the meantime, his in-dash stereo played a Wham! tape over and over and over again until the battery ran out.

I can't think of a way to spend a more horrible 48 hours.

15. I could be wrong,
but I think the slogan "Choose Life" was the UK's "Just Say No", and wasn't an statement about reproductive freedom, but rather it was an anti-drugs statement.

14. When did the state get in the bumpersticker business?
I don't understand the rationale for this at all.

Special plates started as a means of raising revenue for state sponsored programs: wildlife, literacy, veterans, universities, etc.

It was an easy, optional tax or sorts.

Somehow it's morphed into a venue for political expression and it's absurd. It totally exceeds the purpose of a license plate.

They already mess up the paint job on their cars with those little fish symbols, ribbon decals of all kinds, and WWJD stickers. If it makes 'em feel better, fine. I don't know who they think they're going to convert to their thinking...sure nobody I know!

It's a lost cause, and not only in Ga, but Ala, Miss, and SC too.

The best bet the Dems have in any of those states is to convince people that they can be against gay rights, abortion, and stem cell research, but the Pubs are going to do them much more harm by destroying SS, instigating constant wars, and destroying the economy for them and their children with insainly high debt!

Trying to change their minds on the other issues is like trying to convince Bin Laden that Alah was an evil man...it's just not going to happen!

38. Pro-choice license plates
'Mullis and other Republicans resisted an attempt by some Democrats to amend the bill by adding a "Pro Family, Pro-Choice," plate as an option for motorists.'

This is from Georgia, where some folks have passed a law allowing motorists to choose an anti-abortion slogan for their license plates. The Dems, well-meaning, I'm sure, suggested the above amendment.
Sure. I can just see people in Georgia flocking to get their pro-choice license plates. And the following morning the phone lines to all the insurance companies would be jammed. " Yeah, all the windows smashed." "Every tire slashed, while it was sitting in my driveway overnight." "It was such a pretty car, and they spray-painted it all over. It's a real mess." "Looks like someone took a sledge hammer to it. And I just simply can't imagine why."
Guess.

39. Choose Life is a "reasonable" statement
and the statement could only opposed by those who would want people to not choose life. It implies there IS a choice, and you are lobbying people to make a specific one.

It is no different from save the wildlife plates, in theory.

There is no implicit anti-choice statment, even though I agree it is Pro-Life people who advocate and claim "membership" from these plates. They would claim that all people with these plates are teetotallers, just as all the Pro-Choice fundies here would. This simply cannot be the case.

Their claim to membership from all the plates would be false, however, as there may very well be dozens or hundreds of well meaning, very Pro-Choice women with "Choose Life" plates on their cars, and just aren't savvy to the political ramifications of the debate behind the plate.

Just as hundreds if not thousands or tens of thousands of ardent Pro-Life women use Planned Parenthood services without realizing the political polarization of the situation.

We are too polarized here.

THAT SAID, I do agree with the statement that it could be crossing the line to use license plates for political, issue or fundraising purposes. Of course that would mean no VFW plates, no Zoo plates, no historical or land preservation plates, no college plates, etc.

Perhaps a comparatively subtle reply would be a plate for women's rights, not specifically for Pro-Choice?

I am personally Pro-Life.
