People who are eager to see a Hillary Rodham Clinton angle in nearly every Washington personnel move -- and three years before the next presidential election, there are plenty of those -- will enjoy a frisson from the latest machinations at the Democratic National Committee. The new communications director for the party is Karen Finney, who served as deputy press secretary in the first lady's office during the Clinton years. She was also a spokeswoman for Clinton's successful Senate campaign in New York in 2000.

Finney's move is part of a shuffling at the DNC under new Chairman Howard Dean. She is replacing Jano Cabrera, who said he is headed to a beach in Maui and will announce longer-term plans by May 1. Research director Jason Miner is also moving on, and will be replaced by Mike Gehrke, who like Finney worked in the Clinton White House, and later did research for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

As for Hillary Clinton's political network, it's been a busy month, with longtime friend and Democratic operative Harold Ickes taking over America Coming Together, the influential labor-backed political group, and New York-based consultant Howard Wolfson taking on a contract to shape strategy at the state Democratic Party in New York.

I think she'll moderate her language and votes for the next 3 years and win the nomination without having to "run left" for the primaries just because of her popularity among the base. She'll trumpet her moderate tone for the general election, but she'll have a hard time getting past her image problems with the 10-12% of the electorate that's really up for grabs. Then it becomes a matter of who she's up against. McCain, she loses bad. Condi or Rudy and its a tossup. Frist or any of the other pretenders and she wins running away.

10. If she is our nominee in '08, all the right-wing crazies will come out

of the woodwork, and many Independents and moderate Republicans will not consider voting for her. The thought of Bill in the White House again will elicit a very strong gag response in many, many non-Dems.

I'm also afraid that if she runs in the primaries, she will split the Democratic party into pro-Clinton and anti-Clinton factions, which would make the Republicans jump for joy. I'd say "dance with glee," but many fundies don't approve of dancing.

And it won't be just the crazies. There are a lot of independents, d moderate Dems, and a few moderate Repubs out there who have a real Yuck! response to Clinton at this point. I think that they will stay home if she is our nominee rather than vote for whatever piece of trash the Pubbies nominate.

A lot of my friends, neighbors and family share that opinion, and I think that they are pretty average voters in the middle of the spectrum. And a lot of these people want to get the hell our of Iraq and can't figure out anymore why we're still there, apparently unlike Sen. Clinton.

I'll vote for her, but I just don't think that she can win, no matter how popular she is in New York. She just has a lot of baggage.

In other words, the stronger the Dem party, the stronger each Dem senator will be.

Personally, I think the party would do well to listen to Hillary. Winning that senate seat in NY and maintaining high positive ratings in that state is a good thing!

That said, I'm not committed to anyone at this point.

But I think she'll run and I think she should run. The time is right.
