"There was a clear disagreement," Nicholson said of the rift between the Vatican and the White House over the use of military force to topple the regime of Saddam Hussein.


The pope, who died Saturday, "was a man of peace, and he always hoped for the peace option," Nicholson said in an interview with the Denver Post.


"If he could keep war from breaking out, there's always a chance that peace would break out," Nicholson said. "That was his position about Iraq; he made that clear to me. He also said that war is a defeat for humanity, that war is not always inevitable."


In a failed attempt to sway President George W. Bush from a military strike, the pope had sent an emissary to Washington in the run-up to the war.

4. Listened to Nicholson spin on CNN this morning

The man was pathetic. Even when Carol Costello pointed out to him that the Pope was against the Iraq war, he could not stop spinning. Talked about how Bush and the Pope were in agreement that evil existed in the world, how it needed to be defeated and war is always an option. Then he talked about how Bush and the Poe "shared" many values and were in agreement on the "culture life". Made me want to :puke:

I believe the Pope carried a heavy burden in his heart, that the invasion of Iraq was a test of some sorts for him, could he keep it from happening by being an example to the most powerful country in the world, a country filled with the Catholic faithful.

He could not sway george w. bush. I believe bush caused a suffering to the Pope which he kept to himself, but tormented him greatly.
