Venezuelan VP Rangel:The CIA is plotting to kill Chávez

Venezuelan VP José Vicente Rangel Friday in Havana claimed that President Hugo Chávez' life "is seriously threatened," and put the blame on the CIA for plotting to kill the Venezuelan head of State.

"President Chávez' life is in serious danger," Rangel said during a summit on terrorism held in Habana and hosted by Cuban president Fidel Castro, news agency EFE reported.

Rangel added that both Colombian paramilitary troopers and hired assassins and Cuban exiles in Miami are plotting to assassinate Chávez, while "the Central Intelligence Agency is pulling the strings."

...have to do with that book, 'Confessions of an Economic Hitman'? Did they get a loan from the World Bank, and Chavez saw what 'repaying' that loan was doing to his country (stratifying it between the Haves and Have-Nots), so he's basically told the World Bank to piss off, he's using his country's wealth to help his people, and now the jackals are after him? Sorry for the run-on oversimplification, but I've been wondering about this. I can't find that Chavez has done anything to deserve the bad press he's getting from the WH, unless it's to do with the World Bank. And you just know our elitists would rather drag someone through the mud for being a "dangerous socialist" than admit it had anything to do with loan sharks.

There is no doubt that when you dance with the world bank you will be required to let private interests buy up your country's natural resources. Now with Venezuala we're not just talking water and maybe some tin mines, no, as you know we're talking oil!

Of course with such a valuable resource a leader could do mountains of good for the poor in their country. If he is spending the money on schools, housing and other necessities to the poor then large corporations who rule the world aren't getting their "fair share" now are they?

Chavez is very close to nationalizing foriegn oil assets, beginning with raising taxes on foreign oil companies. Perhaps more importantly, he is beginning to barter oil with other developing countries rather than pricing non-US-bound oil exports in dollars. Many say the real reason we finally invaded Iraq is that Saddam Hussein began to price oil in Euros under the oil for food program.

Greater than any other threat to US interests is the status of dollar hegemony.

Chavez' oil-for-barter program is one step away from directly challening dollar oil pricing.

Our entire credit-soaked economy depends on preventing this.

I've heard the same thing about Hussein as you. The history there points to it as well; the guy who was in charge before Saddam, a long time ago, wanted to nationalize their oil and started dealing with the Soviets. That's when we stepped in and made a deal with Hussein and the Ba'athists: we'd help him into power if he promised not to nationalize Iraqi oil. I don't know if this is true but the pieces sure fit.

We've caused an awful lot of misery in the world with our gluttony for oil. And we've wasted all that time as well, not bothering to find an alternative we KNEW we'd need one day. We, the people, really have no idea what's been done in our name.
