Poll: Most Americans believe New Orleans will never recover

(CNN) -- A majority of Americans believe the city of New Orleans will never completely recover from the effects of Hurricane Katrina and the resulting flooding, according to results of a CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll released Tuesday.

But a majority of respondents -- 63 percent -- said they believe the city should rebuild. And 66 percent said they believe all New Orleans residents should evacuate the city.

Respondents also disagreed widely on who is to blame for the problems in the city following the hurricane -- 13 percent said Bush, 18 percent said federal agencies, 25 percent blamed state or local officials and 38 percent said no one is to blame. And 63 percent said they do not believe anyone at federal agencies responsible for handling emergencies should be fired as a result.

However, a resounding 79 percent said they believe gas companies are taking advantage of the situation and charging unfair prices to consumers as a result of the hurricane.

The federal government's performance received the same ratings, while the response of state and local officials was viewed negatively by 35 percent and positively by 37 percent.

So what it is below sea level. So is half of Holland and so are other places. If we picked only places that were safe to live I am sure their would be few places in the world with people. Did any one see how they were putting homes in the middle of the wet lands? That is where the real trouble is. It is like letting homes on the natural sand dunes along the NE sea coast. Some things you can not do but for a city that has been their for 300 years they must have done some thing right.Shall we get rid of some of the great cities in the world like St. Petersburg etc because they were built in an odd place? 13% blame Bush. 25% blame state & local. And a whopping 63% don't think anybody did enough wrong to be fired. I wish I was surprised, but it's just as I've been saying all along - in the Bizzarro Bushworld we live in now, Dems will take more heat for Katrina than Bush. Partly for the State & Locals who get much of the blame for the failed evactuations and rescues, and partly for "playing politics with human suffering" for Dems who call for firings, investigations, etc.

But I guess we (at DU) aren't really choosing to acknowledge this, 'cause I don't see any threads about it other than this one, which seems to focus on a side issue of trying to imagine NOLA's recovery.

No, this poll is VERY bad news for us, and it looks like we've decided to ignore it. Denial?

15. Oh yeah. I'd like to be optimistic, but...

...it's better to be realistic and not get your hopes up where Bushco are concerned. Still, I have to admit there are SOME positive signs, like the press conference today where they hounded Scotty for the 2nd day in a row. If they're still doing that next week, that's a VERY good sign.
