Ex-President Clinton Opposes Setting Iraq Timetable (Update3)

Dec. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Former President Bill Clinton said the U.S. should restructure how its troops are deployed in Iraq and begin taking some personnel out of the country without setting a firm timetable for a withdrawal.

``It seems to me the best thing to do is heed the wishes of all the leaders of Iraq, the various sectors, who say they want us to draw down our forces,'' Clinton said in a CNN interview broadcast tonight. ``We don't want to set a fixed timetable if that led to chaos.''

Clinton's remarks illustrate an emerging split in the Democratic Party over how to deal with the conflict in Iraq.

John Murtha is right. Randi Rhodes was right. A lot of people have said it. We have done all we can do (damage is what I see) in Iraq militarily. They need to fix the infrastructure, turn it over to the Iraqis and get OUT! But since we know that is contrary to PNAC's plan, they're fighting it. Is Bill a total sell-out at this point?!

9. I agree with the no time table idea, but there is an alternative.

I think everyone agrees that our troops are energizing the insurgents, and we do need to plan to leave. I also believe we need to give the Iraqi's a reason to take the responsibility of securing their own govt and not depend on us to fight their battles for them.

We need to push the training harder. Even knowing they'll make some mistakes, put the Iraq troops in the lead on some missions, with American backup, then return and retrain on the areas of their weakness.
