To be quite cold-blooded about it, there are far more people who would be negatively affected by a ban on abortion than a ban on gay marriage. In the former case, one could generally count on more fundies being mobilized to vote for a ban than you could gays and lesbians voting against it (while lots of "tolerant" straights wouldn't see it as something that concerned them enough to get out and vote), so it was a winning issue for the G.O.P. But a ban on abortion? For every Religious Right type you will get to the polls, you'll get two or three irate pro-choicers (mostly women, but also men who want the option to be open so that their girlfriend or daughter doesn't have to have a baby they don't want) who see it as a matter of protecting their own rights.

My guess would be that, should Roe be overturned and the decision returned to the states, any attempt to put an abortion ban on a state ballot will likely hurt the Republicans in that election. Pro-choicers (once you motivate them to get themselves to the polls) are likely to vote for Democratic candidates as well.

My daughter attended Catholic schools, although I'm not Catholic, and she is personally pro-life...but she has voted democratic in every election. The USSC could decline to hear the case right now as well. We just don't know what they will do but it will take some time. I doubt these issues will be before the court earlier than the next term which begins this October. I think there's a real class issue at play here. Rich women can travel out of state to have their abortions. Poor ones don't have that option.

So maybe they should make mandatory daily pregancy checks for all women in Mississippi (you can't protect them if you don't know they exist!) and, if pregnant, make the mothers-to-be wear mandatory tracking collars. Women taveling out of state would be required to report to the State Pregnancy Assurance Board upon return, to verify that the blastocyst is still in utero. Missing blastocysts would be referred to the DA to determine if foul play was involved.

A similar bill was introduced in the Indiana legislature this session but as far as I know it's not gone anywhere (and has probably died by now) and our governor, despite how much I abhor him(Bush's fmr. When abortion is criminalized, the penalties are extremely severe. Some DUers think these laws can and will be circumvented by doctors -- they are wrong.

Abortion clinics have already disappeared from nearly all small communities because of violence (ie bombings and murders of docs). In the bad old days, doctors were prosecuted for murder and lost their licenses to practice medicine.

That's what drives it underground and leaves it to non-professionals who may not know or care how to make an abortion safe and sanitary -- they are risking prison for as much money as you can scrape together. That is what is meant by "back-alley" abortions. Women will again bleed to death or die of infection.

But none of that matters if you are a fanatic or a Bush.

One thing that many people do not know is that a woman absolutely CAN get pregnant from having sex just once. Actually, in most cases due to the high number of sperm a male produces, that's all it takes.
My sister got pregnant as a teen ager before abortion was legal by having sex JUST ONCE. I got pregnant with each of my kids by having unprotected sex just once with my husband. I know this is true because in the first case, we tried once right before my husband had to go on a business trip. The second time we tried just once and then he got the flu.
When people assume a girl or woman is promiscuous and that's why she got pregnant, I know they are full of shit.

is prophetic in an Orwellian sense. 

We can and we must stop the onslaught of fundamentalist

wrote such a thing a few years ago I would think that I was in
"extremist mode" and now I cannot process the
political madness around me fast enough. I believe this is
similar to what happened in Nazi Germany. -Sane and decent

there is something every single person who reads DU can do.  I

impacted by this newest threat to civil liberties, to fight
the attack against Wade vs Roe. 

I am not a political expert and I have a question that someone
might be able to answer for me. If the day comes when George
Bush is impeached, indicted and understood to be the unlawful
president that he is; can his appointments to the Supreme
Court, be challenged?  What legal protections exist to protect
the people against a rogue Supreme Court? By rogue, I mean a
Supreme Court that does not reflect the mainstream of the
American people nor their best interests but instead panders
to special interest groups.

This is my first posting and I wish to thank the brave people
