Harkin calls for troop pullout in Iraq


DES MOINES, Iowa Senator Tom Harkin has called for the withdrawal of American troops from Iraq, saying it's the only solution after recent religious violence in that nation.

The Iowa Democrat says Iraq is now in a civil war. He says American withdrawal should begin immediately to--quote--"extricate ourselves from that quagmire over there."

Harkin's comments place him among the first members of Congress to publicly state that the war in Iraq has become a fight between Muslim factions.

Surely he must be thinking of us who put in so many hours for him and who also have been contacting him urgently calling for an end to the war. Perhaps he remembered also his best old-time supporter here who has suffered a stroke and is in a Dubuque hospital, someone who spoke highly of him at our January caucuses before she became so afflicted.

Where was his voice of opposition when the Iraq war resolution was voted on. Even Bush senior advised his son not to go to war because it would destabilize the middle-east. Now here we are, three years later, thousands of American service men and women have died, hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians have perished into indistinguishable piles of blood and bone, and U.S. taxpayers are being drained daily for this war.

Why didn't anybody listen to congresswoman Barbara Lee when she voiced her opposition of the war?

I'm starting to gain a new found appreciation for him.

He made a mistake in voting for the resolution earlier , but I see he learned his mistake and understands now that nothing can be accomplished.

Harkin may be one of the ONLY Dem Senators who has a straight record in voting against these neocons Bushco puts up.

I grew up in Missouri, and live in Iowa now. Harkin and Governor Vilsack give me reason to believe that I made the right decision.
