GOP Not Meeting Promises in Budget Week

WASHINGTON - It's a busy, unhappy budget week on Capitol Hill. At a time when Republicans are eager to prove their mettle on spending restraint, their deeds are falling far short of their election-year promises.

The House is poised to pad the deficit by passing $91 billion in debt-financed funding for the war in
Iraq and for hurricane relief, while the Senate is working on a budget plan shorn of tax and spending cuts wanted by President Bush.

To top it all off, by week's end the Senate must vote on permitting the federal debt to grow by $781 billion to avoid a disastrous government default. The measure would allow the debt to grow to almost $9 trillion — $3 trillion more than when Bush took office.

but you, and people like you, who keep "bringing up the Bill Clinton and/or the "Clenis" are so out-of-touch/not-up-to-date....it's not even remotely funny anymore ~ get a clue.

It's been the republican MO to blame somebody for everything, and here's Cornyn going into the passive voice about the caucus's lack of enthusiasm, as if it wasn't THEIR OWN BUDGET. It's the another moment to blame Clinton.

and there's "smart people" who support this guy??? How smart can they be? Or are they just payin' for a simpleton to do their bidding (most likely I would guess/be pretty sure of).

3. People Are Not Enthusiastic

What a telling turn of phrase.

What people is Cornyn talking about? The American people? No. The American people, frankly are very concerned about the war and the economy. Yet, we don't have a clue what exactly the government is up to with the budget.

"People" must mean Congress people. And, since we know Repubs don't associate with Dems, it must mean Repub Congress people. We also know that Repub Congress people are only concerned about winning the election - otherwise, they would just do whatever Bush the Lesser asks of them.

Will the Repubs pass legislation that will cause them to loose their control of congress, as the Dems did in 92 with their budget reform measures?

Only time will tell. But, we do know that Republican Congress people are not enthusiastic!

If he is describing my feelings about him personally he is considerably short of the mark. I recoil in revulsion. I gag in disgust. For once I find myself in the unique position of being in strong agreement with Mr. Cornyn.

(too bad his first name isn't Ed, right? :D) He's got a rep here in TX as being dumb as a stump. If HE can see the lack of enthusiasm, it must be d@mn near overwhelming!

4. It's amazinghow "hard" it is for these dipsticks...

The fixes are multiple and simple (they have been outlined on this board many times over the past several years), and include (but aren't limited to):

1) Eliminate the tax give-aways to the wealthy
2) Tax corporations that do busines sin the US (no breaks for overseas HQs)
3) Cut military spending (e.g. - get rid of the Crusader artillery piece, the Osprey, etc.)
4) reduce/eliminate the tax burdens on the middle ($50K - $150K per year) and low income (<$50K per year) earners to help stimulate the economy

Again, this isn't intended to be exhaustive, but even these simple things would be a tremendous start towards making a sustainable Federal budget. The only reason the 'pukes are having any trouble is that their primary constituents are the ones that would be dinged by anything approaching a realistic budget.


And no, cutting social safety net programs is NOT required. It almost always does more harm than good...
