Joshua Nichols grew up in the shadow of the crimes of his father, Terry Nichols, one of the two men convicted in the deaths of 168 people in the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City.
Terry Nichols is serving a life sentence in prison, and at the Regional Justice Center on Monday, 23-year-old Joshua Nichols was fighting to try to avoid a long prison sentence of his own as he went on trial, accused of trying to kill two Las Vegas police officers last fall.
Officer Craig O'Neill told jurors that he noticed Joshua Nichols driving what the officer suspected was a stolen vehicle at a Chevron station at Tropicana Avenue and Rainbow Boulevard on Oct. 2, 2005.
When O'Neill and his partner, Todd Mueller, approached him outside of the vehicle in the parking lot of the gasoline station, he disobeyed their orders to stop and started walking at a fast pace toward the stolen Toyota Supra with car keys in hand, the officers said.
