Unpopular President, Deep Divisions in GOP Add Up to a Congress Having Trouble Doing Its Job

WASHINGTON Jul 9, 2006 (AP)— Could a Republican-controlled Congress pass a bill to protect the words "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance from court challenges? No problem, especially if proposed during the patriotic season leading up to the Fourth of July, Republican leaders thought. No way, it turned out.
The bill, the first item on the GOP's election-year "American Values Agenda," couldn't get past a House committee. Even worse for the Republicans: They couldn't blame the flameout on Democrats. One of the GOP's very own, Rep. Bob Inglis of South Carolina, voted no. Seven other Judiciary Committee Republicans skipped the panel's meeting entirely.

So it goes this year for House Republicans, their majority in jeopardy for the first time in more than a decade. An unpopular president, deep divisions in their ranks and Democrats determined to regain control add up to a Congress that's having trouble doing its most basic job: passing legislation.

Republican leaders tried to shrug off the setbacks, while Democrats have pounced on the lack of progress.

1. The "under God" part is something I would only support

say had the pledge always contained the words as a symbolic oath, but the pledge was changed (and only recently in the context of American history) to include "under God"... so take it back out.

4. What we think of as their priorities, are not...not really!

Their priorities are to Lie, Cheat and Steal!

They constantly invoke family values as a shield when they are working diligently on nefarious,
malevolently inspired (money making) issues.

They distract public thinking away from what they are really doing, by making inflammatory issues
such as flag-burning, pledge of allegiance, prayer in school, out of non-issues.

Then, the masses stand and applaud themselves..."we won!"

Gotta run faster to keep up with these thieves.

5. Average Americans will see this nonsense as what it is & be ticked off

because most of us understand that there are MUCH more important issues then this type of nonsense meant merely to pander to their "backwash" base.

Most of us want action on REAL issues such as: the war, gas prices, the economy (which most of us do NOT see or experience as being "healthy"), etc.

This type of BS/fluff is a waste of time and taxpayers money but... OTOH it probably does work in the Dems favor so..... :evilgrin:

I may be a bit more of a pessimist, than you. I don't think everyone gets it.
The Repub Lite that get it won't admit it, and if they do, they refuse to do anything about it.

Their base doesn't get it and most of them probably never will, their little world and minds are too narrow and fogged in with ignorance, fear and hate to see or think with any real clarity.

I absolutely agree that the contrast in what is truly important to "us" versus "them" should become an essential and prominent part of the Dem platform.

13. Umm.. excuse me and I'm not? I used the terms in quotes for a reason....

By using the term "party platform"... I assumed you meant the Dem party who for the most part is running against the Repub "party platform" (hence my use of "us" meaning "Dem" and "them" meaning "Repubs").

Inferring that I'm somehow not as good as you or may not back "Americans" as well as you because I used the words "us" and "them" instead of Dem and Repub is not only petty but very undeserved.

9. It really has nothing to do with God or the Pledge it has to do with

eliminating judicial review. If they could pass a law saying courts could not even look at the issue on this one they could pass it on any issue. It is trying to bypass our entire legal system of checks and balances. Only Republicans would try to undermine our Constitution in such a manner. Thugs is what they are and not fit for any public office.
