GMO Chinese rice found in EU: greens

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - European consumers are at risk from unauthorized genetically modified (GMO) rice grown in China after evidence of a strain was found in Britain, France and Germany, two leading environment groups said on Tuesday.


The Chinese rice, modified to resist certain insects, was found in samples of rice stick noodles in France and Germany, and also in rice vermicelli in Britain, Greenpeace International said, citing the results of two rounds of laboratory tests.

Five samples out of 27 tested positive for the unauthorized rice strain, officials at the two groups said.

"Innocent consumers again become the victims of the GE (genetic engineering) industry's 'contamination first' strategy," Greenpeace International GMO campaigner Jeremy Tager said in a statement.

The Chinese rice contained a protein that might cause allergenic reactions in humans, he said. It was supposed to be used only in field trials and was not approved for commercial growing because of concerns about its safety........

They will use deception to do it, if it means a fatter profit for them. It's that simple. 6. Ironical that Schapiro was once quoted as scoffing that the way

people spoke of him, you'd have thought he was the devil incarnate.

About a year ago, the UK Daily Mail reported in an article that gastric illnesses in the US had increased by, I think, 50% since the introduction there of GM foods to the public.

In the UK, as you would expect, Blair has been less than helpful in banning the trial cultivation of the stuff, but they won't have GM foods sold in the restaurants in Parliament.

The other day, a very interesting article appeared in the Mail headed, "Organic milk really is much better for you".

Apparently, a group of leading scientists stated that organic milk should be labelled as better for you than the traditional pinta, and had called on the Food Standards Agency to allow the change to acknowledge the health benefits of organic milk.

They had found that the organic variety contained much higher levels of the important omega-3 fatty acids.

It is also richer in a number of other key vitamins and nutrients. They include vitamin E, which keeps the nervous system healthy.

The article concludes,
"The new analysis of organic milk, produced by cows that feed on pesticide-free pastures and eat GM-free food, was carried out by Glasgow and Liverpool universities.

Researcher Dr Kathryn Ellis said, 'This is the first large-scale research into the differences between organic and non-organic milk. We want to raise awareness of that difference, because we feel it is significant.'

The FSA, which has said previously that organic products are no more nutritious, has promised to examine the research."
