Wis. governor race focuses on stem cells

MADISON, Wis. - Gov. Jim Doyle paints his re-election bid in stark terms: If voters choose his opponent, they will shut down stem cell research that could mean medical cures for debilitating illnesses and an economic boom for Wisconsin.

"There will be no turning back after the vote on Nov. 7," the Democratic governor warned in a recent debate against GOP Rep. Mark Green (news, bio, voting record). "We need to keep Wisconsin the state where people look for hope."

Scientists in Wisconsin are pioneers in embryonic stem cell research and the state is a leading player in a nationwide debate of the moral, scientific and economic issues involved.

Doyle has made the fight over embryonic stem cell research a centerpiece of his campaign.

His opponent — whom polls show within reach of winning the race — opposes the use of tax dollars to expand the research and favors tighter restrictions on the science.

The issue has put Doyle, a Catholic, at odds with church leaders in the state. It also risks motivating the state's powerful anti-abortion groups that back Green, also a Catholic.

With the race so tight, the issue could help Doyle, said Arthur Caplan, a University of Pennsylvania professor of bioethics who follows stem cell politics.

"Doyle has chosen to really feature it and he's using it as not only one of the moral distinctions between him and Green but also economic," he said. "I don't know if it's enough to swing the election but most people want biotechnology."

State policies vary widely, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. California and five other states have moved to pour millions of dollars into the field while others have restrictions or bans that hamper the research.

When Forbes Magazine recently dubbed Madison a "hotbed of biocapitalism," it missed the mark by a mile, or, we should say, approximately 1,230 square miles. Although anchored by Madison and the University of Wisconsin main campus, the broader, vibrant biotech community "hotbed" is all of Dane County.

More than 100 life science companies are located within the county. They range in size from giant reagent manufacturer Promega Corporation, with more than 700 employees, annual revenues of over $137 million, and customers in more than 90 countries, to small companies with no more than 10 employees such as NeoClone, producer of monoclonal antibody products. They represent a great diversity of life science research and products, with companies focused on everything from drug production and research to agricultural biotechnology at companies such as Monsanto's Agracetus Campus in Middleton, bovine semen producer ABS Global in DeForest, and Madison's Nutra-Park, developer of products that enhance and prolong the shelf life of commodities such as fruits and flowers.

Why did no one criticize Republican Senator Arlen Specter when he used Michael J. Fox in his 2004 campaign ad?

Because Democrats knew he was right and Republicans only make a fuss when they think its to their advantage. Let's make sure eveyone knows about the Specter/MJFox ad to use in rebuttals.

7. Don't read too much into the signs

I think Green is paying farmers along interstates to display those, and their campaign has done a good job of it, way ahead of Doyle. I work in Beloit and its 50:50 down here. I expect Doyle to win.

But I have talked to a few voters out in WI-5 who absolutely hate Jim Doyle, and its because of the stem cell issue. Really strange, its giving the one-issue abortion voters some kind of reinforcement.
