As of Friday, Aug. 17, 2007, at least 3,705 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count. The figure includes seven military civilians. At least 3,046 died as a result of hostile action, according to the military's numbers.
The AP count is 7 higher than the Defense Department's tally, last updated Friday at 10 a.m. EDT.

• A soldier was killed Friday in a roadside bombing in eastern Baghdad.

The latest identifications reported by the military:
• Army Staff Sgt. Robert R. Pirelli, 29, Franklin, Mass., died Wednesday in Diyala province of wounds from small arms fire; was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Carson, Colo.
• Army Pfc. Willard M. Kerchief III, 21, Evansville, Ind., died Thursday in Balad of wounds from combat in Taramiyah; was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team), Fort Lewis, Wash.
