One of every four California students drops out

A new statewide count of high school dropouts, based on the tracking of individual students, shows significantly higher numbers than have been reported for years in California.

The dropout report, released Wednesday by the California Department of Education, estimated that one in four high school students - 24.2 percent - failed to graduate with their classes or move into another educational program to continue their high school education. The estimates were derived from data from the 2006-07 school year.

The 24.2 percent dropout rate is of great concern, O'Connell said.

"Twenty-four percent of students dropping out is not good news," he said in a statement. The more accurate data, he said, should lead to greater accountability and more focus on helping students complete school.

where there is huge pressure on young men to quit school and go to work.

Speaking generally, the Mexican subpopulation is subject to different economic pressures. Illegal immigrants especially must work for cash. Furthermore, many Mexicans see a man's worth more intimately connected with his work in the present rather than his possibilities in the future. This is a powerful force.

4. With NCLB still in FULL FORCE...

You can bet the public schools' curriculum will get even narrower
this year, more electives will be cut, and any remaining shop/industrial arts
classes and even Driver Ed (gone from my school for 3 yrs!) will be cut by many schools.

Nowadays,
it's all about taking copious notes, and being tested on them via exhaustive
A-E multiple-choice tests.
That's it--No writing, no synthesis, and no understanding in many cases.

NCLB is a dreary, toxic time machine
back to the days of standardized mass-regurgitation
of myriad facts humans are sure to forget.

The country is trying to change politically, but unfortunately, iron-strong, but
destructive policies like NCLB remain in full force, and the public schools
are cracking more & more under the siege.

KKKonservative policies remain in place at this time--We are
still headed over the cliff, with less & less time to repair things.

It looks like they lose most of them in 12th grade -- must be the exit test. Damn.

Meanwhile, across the bay in Marin County, Tam has a 1.3% dropout rate. Must have been all my friends. :hide:
