Poll gives Obama edge in two of three key states

ST. PAUL, Minnesota (CNN) -- A new poll suggests that Barack Obama is widening his lead over John McCain in two battleground states but indicates the race is dead even in Ohio, the state that decided the last presidential election.

In a CNN/Time/Opinion Research Corp. survey out Wednesday afternoon, 55 percent of Iowa registered voters who were questioned said that Obama, D-Illinois, is their choice for president, with 40 percent backing McCain, R-Arizona. That's more than double the lead Obama had in a University of Iowa poll taken early last month.

"Obama is winning in all regions of the state, even in the western counties, where George W. Bush beat John Kerry by 17 points," CNN Polling Director Keating Holland said. "Obama is winning rural voters in Iowa, not something you see in many other states."

It appears to be a similar story in Minnesota, where the Republicans are holding their national convention this week. The poll indicates that Obama has a 12-point lead over McCain, 53 percent to 41 percent. That's up slightly from a 10-point lead Obama held in a Humphrey Institute survey taken last month.

Western Iowa is going blue?!! I used to live out there, and it's redder than cardinals out there. It's as bad as Nebraska and South Dakota in that region.

If the election went like it did in 2004, with the exception that Iowa, Colorado, New Mexico, all go for Obama as they are likely to, then Barack wins the election 273-265.

That's with McCain winning Ohio, Florida, and Virginia.


However, since Ohio and Virginia are tied right now, Barack has a great chance to win those states, and make it a 306-232 victory.

Obama had a great ground game in Iowa during the primaries and made a LOT of good impressions all over the state, and the state's finally feeling the effects of the Bush economy. Both factors have lead to a much stronger Democratic party this year than in '04. There are still quite a few Republicans, but they're a lot quieter than in 2004. We don't bother them as long as they keep that head down, and that tail tucked between their legs.
