McCain must embrace Palin's beliefs, evangelical leader says

(CNN) -- Her faith is one of the reasons many evangelical Christians are excited about Sarah Palin's addition to the Republican presidential ticket, but the Alaska governor's evangelical beliefs have also drawn scrutiny.

Evangelicals are closely watching whether the McCain campaign embraces Palin's religious views or shies away from them, Tony Perkins, president of Family Research Council, told CNN.

Perkins sat down with CNN's John Roberts on Tuesday to discuss how the vice presidential pick's faith could influence the presidential election.

Roberts: For a couple of decades, she was a member of the Pentecostal Assembly of God church. Six years ago, she changed to the Wasilla Bible Church. I read an article in which one of her former pastors suggested may be playing down her faith because there may be some misunderstanding about her Pentecostalism. What do you think about all of this?

Generally speaking, most people don't take too kindly to having others' religious beliefs- especially EXTREME AND BIZARRE religious beliefs crammed down their throats.

The campaign needs to realize this and stop pandering to these fundie nutters- and instead, start showing people in no uncertain terms what they're all about.

They're 15% or at most 20% of the electorate, for crying put loud- and they will will never vote Democratic.

35. I get confused on this stuff all the time --

I never can figure out what's the difference between "evangelical" and "pentecostal." When I was a little kid I thought they meant the same thing - and in those days, their women wore no cosmetics, didn't go to the beauty salon, wore frumpy clothes, etc. But now it seems to be all jumbled up.

I don't mean to insult anybody, just curious. I was raised Catholic, and I know we were always told they regarded us as children of the devil.

Evangelicals generally believe that you must consciously accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior and have a personal relationship with Him, the literal truth of the Bible and the need to tell others about the Gospels (a practice called evangelizing, hence their name which comes from the Greek for Good News which is what Gospel means in Greek).

Pentecostals are a subset of Evangelicals because in addition to all that, Pentecostals believe in the Baptism of the Holy Spirit which is outwardly manifest, generally by speaking in tongues, or one or more of the other gifts of the Holy Spirit as set out in I Corinthians which include, IIRC, interpretation of tongues, healing, discernment of spirits, the ability to cast out spirits, prophecy, miracle working, the word of knowledge and the word of wisdom (these last two are actually different - word of knowledge is the ability to tell someone something factual while the word of wisdom is the ability to give someone a spiritual insight on something in their life that they are dealing with). There are of course differences in theology among various groups of Pentecostals, but that pretty much sums up their main beliefs.
