There has been a lot of conflict in Tripoli, so a lot of journalists have been trekking up there to do stories. Also there has a been a mobilization of the Syrian Army on the border which journalists have been investigating. I myself went up to neighborhoods of Tripoli experiencing violence and the Syrian-Lebanese border to check out the mobilization a few times the last 3 weeks; and overall it was very safe. I fear that some naive American kids without much Arabic knowledge could have gotten themselves in trouble though.
