Halliburton and health troubles leave Cheney vulnerable as election approaches

A Time/CNN poll this month found that only 43% of Americans thought Mr Cheney should be on the Republican election ticket. A recent Fox survey found his popularity trailing 10 percentage points behind that of Mr Bush. According to a former official who follows political strategy in the White House, the president's election guru, Karl Rove, has conducted similar polls of his own, with worse results.

Thomas Schaller, a University of Maryland political scientist, pointed out that dropping Mr Cheney would not make dynastic sense for the Bush family, which is widely believed to be grooming the president's younger brother Jeb, who is governor of Florida , to stand in 2008.

"Replacing Cheney with someone like Frist or Giuliani would create an heir apparent. Replacing Cheney is no way to run a proper monarchy," Mr Schaller said.

Agnew was elected to two terms.  When a scandal 
emerged about his past business practices, Agnew 
resigned the Vice Presidency.  President Richard Nixon 
selected Congressman Gerald Ford to replace him.  
Ford became President when Nixon resigned in 1974.

Roosevelt may have had some say in the naming of Truman as his successor, but I have read it was a committee of the party that 'chose' him. Roosevelt and those higher ups in the party knew the vp would be succeeding him before the term was completed.

Actually I'm floundering for a glimmer of hope strategy to deal with a possible Bush election.

Only thing I can come up with, is... we need to get Cheney out of the VP post first. Replace him with someone who's less sleazy than the present White House crew. (Admittedly, the only Repub I'd be relieved to see in this role would be McCain.) Then--unless Tecumseh's curse kicks in pretty fast--proceed to impeach Bush.

This strategy would work best if Cheney had to drop out after the election, to avoid the possibility of a VP candidate who'd be more appealing.
