Bush refuses to criticize Obama in Canada

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Former President George W. Bush says he won't criticize President Barack Obama because Obama "deserves my silence," and says he plans to write a book about the 12 toughest decisions he made in office. Bush's speech Tuesday at a luncheon in Calgary, Alberta was his first since leaving office.

He declined to comment about the Obama administration like former Vice President Dick Cheney. Cheney said Sunday that Obama's decisions are threatening the nation's safety.

Bush says he doesn't know what he'll do in the long term but says he'll write a book that will let people determine what they would have done if their most important job was to protect the country.

"deserves my support." Or even, "I hope he succeeds." As usual, Bush is being less than dishonest.

Besides, he has always had surrogates do his dirty work, even before he was Presient. When he was ready to fire someone, he'd go in and have a great conversation with him or. Then someone else would fire the person.

Not to speak ill of either their predecessors or successors. The idea being that you'd leave the squabbling and fingerpointing for other politicians and show a united front at the Presidential level.

He made some negative comments about Bush back when the Scooter Libby thing was going on, and he was widely criticized for breaking the tradition.

The tradition goes back to the early days of the country when people were worried about clean Presidential successions. It was realized even then that a popular President leaving office with the support of the people could undermine a new President if a decision was made that the people didn't like. You could end up with some people arguing to support the old "popular" President's decision, while others argue that we should support the current President. Those types of squabbles undermine democracy and have led to many governments failing.

Hence the tradition: Former President's never comment (in public) on the decisions or policies of the currently sitting President.
