Mexico: Suspected swine flu deaths climb to 149

Mexican Health Secretary Jose Angel Cordova says the government lacks the staff needed to visit the homes of everyone suspected of dying from swine flu.

He says 1,995 people have been hospitalized with serious cases of pneumonia since the first case of swine flu was reported on April 13. The government does not yet know how many were swine flu.

Of those hospitalized, 1,070 have been released.

4. That is happening because they're testing samples

from people who recovered and people who did not. As the lab confirms more flu cases, the number will climb.

Remember, even with IMSS, Mexicans don't go to the hospital until they're half dead, too, so this represents the most serious cases. People with mild cases aren't being seen and certainly aren't being tracked.

We still don't know what this is. I would imagine the CDC is providing assistance and we'll know more in a week or so.

5. Scottish official confirms Britain's firsts cases of swine flu

Scotland's health secretary says authorities have confirmed Britain's first cases of swine flu. Nicola Sturgeon says tests have "conclusively" confirmed two cases of swine flu in Scotland.

Sturgeon did not say where the tests were carried out or whether the tests showed the same strain of flu that has affected Mexico.

The two infected people were kept in hospital after showing flu-like symptoms following a trip to Mexico.

Sturgeon said today that both individuals were "recovering well in hospital" and that the threat to the British public remains "very low."

9. 7.5% or so of hospitalized cases have died. How does this compare to

"regular" flu? What we are lacking is a total number of affected, which is no doubt FAR more than 1995, so the actual mortality is gonna be skewed downward, perhaps substantially, when you factor those in.

11. You'd have to look at the figures from Mexico during a nasty A strain outbreak

and try to talley up the numbers of deaths related to types of respiratory distress as we've seen in the past several weeks.

That would be a really rough measure- and with so much noise in the beta, you wouldn't be able to attribute much to this particular strain or the other(s) but it might give some idea of what we're looking at.

It'll be interesting to see if this sort of analysis is attempted- assuming Mexican public health authorities have the appropriate data.
