Accused Shooter Complained About Minority Students

The white supremacist accused of opening fire at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum went last month to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis to complain about minority enrollment at the school.

An academy spokesman tells The Associated Press that James von Brunn entered an administration building on May 29, seeking a meeting with academy officials.

Academy spokesman Cmdr. Joe Carpenter says von Brunn didn't meet with a senior academy official, but instead spoke with a school staff member.

Carpenter says von Brunn did not interact with midshipmen and was not considered a safety threat. However, he says academy staff quickly notified Navy authorities "as a result of the extreme views he expressed regarding minorities."

...and the first message I received was that von Brunn was a registered Democrat. I googled and got a few wingnut sites making that claim, but nothing from any upstanding news source. Anybody out there know if this is true of has heard this story?

14. I've since done some more reading on von Brunn.

Apparently, this was in the 60s during which the overtly racist elements wandered off to the GOP. Based on his age, this doesn't even surprise me much. The Phelps thing is very strange. Not too long ago I saw a picture of Fred Phelps with Al Gore at a fundraiser sometime in the 80s. What could he have possible been looking for there? I've had this pointed out to me by rightwing howler monkeys and I'm somewhat at a loss as to how I should respond to it. To be sure, racism and bigotry are found throughout the political spectrum. I'm not so naive as to believe otherwise, but it appears the more obnoxious forms of it have found a home in the GOP. Indeed, the GOP counts on them for votes.

I suppose some of them thrash around for awhile before settling on an 'identity'. Saint Ron the Reagan was, iirc, a union rep for the Actors' Guild before deciding to destroy all unions in America.

Phelps is, I believe, still a 'registered Democrat', but I think he just derives a sardonic and perverse pleasure from tarring the more tolerant party with his filth. I also believe he retains this 'allegiance' to obfuscate the trail of his bigotry.

I doubt he voted for Obama...
