Centrist Dem Leader: Has Committee Votes To Block Health Bill

WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- U.S. Rep. Mike Ross, D-Ark., a leader of fiscally conservative House Democrats, said Wednesday a House plan to overhaul the U.S. health-care system is losing support and will be stuck in committee without changes.

"Last time I checked, it takes seven Democrats to stop a bill in the Energy and Commerce Committee," Ross told reporters after a House vote. "We had seven against it last Friday; we have 10 today."

Three House committees are slated to begin considering the $1 trillion-plus bill this week, but the Energy and Commerce looms as the biggest challenge. That's because it counts among its 36 Democratic members seven members of the Blue Dog Coalition, a fiscally conservative bloc that is opposing the House Democrats' effort.

Ross said the bill, introduced Wednesday by House Democratic leaders, doesn't include provisions adequate to curb rising health care costs, including what the government spends on healthcare.

that the current house bill has reasonably strong public option which thier insurance company masters won't allow because they are afraid it might eventually lead to single payer.

I recently talked to some health care insurance companies and asked them why in the face of possibly losing their businesses do they not make their rates more reasonable. They have a complete attitude of arrogance and indifference as if they know they have us and government by the balls!

They say that because the taxes will "hurt" the rich, who, by trickle-down theory, run our economy.

The theory is still dominant even if the Republicans don't have power right now. Bribed conservative talk-show hosts have been shouting about how this is going to hurt the economy.

Our economy cannot recover right now, thanks to that theory. First, medical bankruptcies are a piano on the neck of the economy. We are the only country to have bankruptcies due to medical expenses. The latest figures available before the mortgage collapse indicated that medical costs were a factor in 62 percent of bankruptcies, and surprisingly, 78 percent of those were filed by people who had medical insurance. These are now in addition to bankruptcies caused by mortgage defaults. The default on those debts, of course, are eaten by all creditors, not just the medical ones. It impairs an already wounded economy. Bankrupt people do not buy houses or cars, and it goes without saying, they live with diminished consumer spending. They are less likely to have retirement funds or savings.

That is just the immediate practical reason. The other reasons are that taxing the wealthy to pay for services like health care will change the dynamic of the economy. Yes, a million dollars a year might have total to less for that business, but far more people will be able to afford products and services, adding to that same businessman's bottom line, probably by a lot. And the workforce will be healthier, and therefore, more productive.

The current health care situation is part of our economic woes. Americans would save AT LEAST 30% on health expenses by adopting single payer. The rest of the world pays far less, and 26 countries get better care.
