Cracker Barrel Suspect's Lawyer: Reservist Spit On Him

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. -- A Clayton County judge granted bond for a man accused of beating an Army Reservist.

Troy West is charged in the beating of Tasha Hill at a Cracker Barrel restaurant in Morrow as her daughter watched.

West was granted $320,500 bond Tuesday. He must wear an ankle monitor, have no victim or witness contact, and he can't be in Clayton County except for court, the airport, traveling on I-75 or to meet with his attorney.

The Clayton County courtroom was divided along racial lines -- those supporting West and those against him.

Clayton County district attorney Tracey Graham Lawson said she watched the security video of the beating 40 times. Lawson said it showed a man twice the size of the victim screaming and attacking Hill while her little girl watched.

Prosecutors said they feel West is a danger to the community because he has a history of violence.

In 1998, West was charged with simple battery and terroristic threats after he attacked a cashier at a K-Mart in Tifton, said Dennis Baker, chief administrator for the district attorney.

According to Baker, West created phony receipts showing he had purchased Matchbox cars at other K-Marts for 59 cents. He argued with the cashier that the price of the cars should be lowered.

When the cashier denied the request, West got into a dispute with him, Baker told the judge.
