Many people feel that its unpatriotic to criticize the U.S. foreign policy especially if troops are involved.

I suppose they feel that it somehow aids the enemy: 'either you're for us or with them'.

For many people a strong USA translates into military dominance. To them it would make America look like a coward if we left immediately.

The media is playing a big role in this fiasco as well. They really don't do investigative journalism anymore and rely on what the Defense Department tells 'em for their news -- its a lot cheaper that way.

A lot of people see the cost of 555 lives outweighting the benefits - control of the largest oil reserves. If 555 American GIs died 'liberating' Haiti you would see outrage.

However, there are hopeful signs: More Americans are beginning to say in public opinion polls that 'the war was not worth it'.

The Mari333s, parents and spouses with loved ones in Iraq are helping to make a difference even if the press/ and gov't pretends not to hear you.

said he goes to sleep at night and listens to the shelling outside, and hes about 10-20 miles west of Baghdad. He also told me "theres a lot of things Ive seen that are pretty bad but I cant tell you on here Ill let you know when I get home"
I think hes afraid his mail is monitored.

It is standard procedure to monitor mail since, well, let's say the Civil War. In WWI, when the british soldiers would be moved into the horrendous Ypres Salient, they'd write letters saying "I pray Sally went to school as expected," knowing that Ipraysally went would signal Ypres Salient to their families. Needless to say, the officers soon put an end to the dear sister Sally letters.

We have all these good people dead-many wounded-what horrors some will have to deal with years after the conflict- in drinking, despair and post-traumatic stress.
