Oklahoma City Community College: Reports of Gunman on OCCC Campus

There are reports this morning that a gunman may be on campus at the Oklahoma City Community College.

Teachers and students are being asked to stay away from campus grounds at this time as police investigate reports of a gunman on campus.

According to the Oklahoma City Community College website: "There has been an incident on the OCCC campus. OKC police are investigating. The campus is on lockdown. Employees and students should not come to campus at this time."

mental health and drug law drive gun violence here. A quick look at canada, with similar gun laws, shows drastically less gun violence.

Despite the massive surge in firearm ownership, firearm violence continues to decline, including the accidental death rate, which is at the lowest point in over 100 years.

Over 96% of firearm owners are not involved in violent crime every year - they cannot be as there are not enough violent crimes to go around.

Probably 90% (at at least over 75%) of firearm homicides are committed by people with extensive prior criminal records and thus cannot legally own firearms.

Your movement bears primary responsibility for the largest possible supply of firearms being readily available to the widest variety of unfit individuals.

I'm part of the movement that wants to restrict ownership of firearms only to law-abiding and mentally-fit people. I pay money to see that this happens.

And when the inevitable tragedies happen, every week, sometimes every day, all you've got to offer is some snotty suggestion that more guns on site would have improved things. Thanks for nothing......

Firearms are no guarantee of safety during an assault any more than seat belts are a guarantee of safety during a car crash. But some people consider it prudent to take advantage of available tools to help in the rare event of needing them, and I support people being able to make that choice.

And in spite of record firearm ownership levels, violent crime and accident rates for firearms continue to decline, no matter how many anecdotes a week you hear about.

OCCC Lockdown: Reports of Gunman but Shot Fired by Security Guard

The Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC) was on lockdown earlier today after reports that a gunman was seen on campus.

However, Oklahoma police have now released a statment that there was no gunman on campus, and the shot heard was accidentially fired by a campus security guard.

Developing Story: Report of Gunman At OCCC Was 'Miscommunication,' School Official Says

OKLAHOMA CITY – A miscommunication about a school shooting in Washington led to the lock down and evacuation of Oklahoma City Community College.

An alert bulletin was issued by law enforcement after a special education teacher was shot and killed Friday at an elementary school in Tacoma, Washington. A student worker saw the bulletin warning campuses to be on alert.

When telling students and employees about the alert, the impression was given that the shooting was on the Oklahoma City Community College campus, school spokesman Cordell Jordan said.

Jordan said it is unfortunate that the miscommunication occurred, but school officials are relieved that no one was injured and the lock down and evacuation procedures went smoothly.

There were reports of people hearing a shot being fired. A police spokesman said that gunshot came from a campus security guard who accidentally discharged his weapon while responding to the initial report of a gunman.

I'm absolutely disappointed that when I am on a college campus I have to abandon my right to defend myself and rely on other people for my personal safety. Especially since the police are almost never present to actually stop crimes, only to interview witnesses and collect evidence after the fact.

18. That is small consolation to the man hit by lightning.

My school, the University of Alabama Huntsville, was closed last week due to a deranged professor shooting 6 of her colleagues in the very building where I have class.

While I am aware of the statistics involving school shootings, one becomes more aware of the possibilities, however rare, when they happen right next to you.

If I was as scared of the world as you, I'd shoot myself.

I am not scared of the world. I have car insurance, life insurance, health insurance, an umbrella insurance policy, homeowner's insurance, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, spare tires, first aid kits, seat belts, and flashlights.

I use all of these things not because I live in fear of car accidents, death, disease, lawsuits, fires, flat tires, minor injuries, or darkness, but because the tools to deal with such eventualities are cheap and I can easily avail myself to them.

In short, the insurance is cheap, so why not avail oneself to it?

Prudence does not equal fear.

just out of sheer curiosity, I have to ask: Say you actually were armed and were in class when you heard the shots...What do you do??

22. Of course, what you so conveniently neglect to mention is that you INCREASE yours and others' risks

by bringing guns into the house or carrying them around as some "form of insurance."

Haven't heard of any homeowners' policies used to kill one's partner or family... though I guess one could still get a nasty paper cut.
