In another sign of the department store industry's struggles to survive, Lord & Taylor announced Wednesday that it intends to close all of its stores in Florida, as well as 25 others across the country.
The move is part of Lord & Taylor's efforts to reposition itself as an upscale fashion retailer, focusing on its core markets in the Northeast and Midwest.
Florida is the state most dramatically affected by Lord & Taylor's plans, with seven of the 32 stores the chain intends to close. The locations include Aventura Mall, Dadeland Mall, Town Center at Boca Raton and the Mall at Wellington Green in Palm Beach County. The other stores are in Orlando and Tampa, plus a store at the Fashion Mall in Plantation that had already been scheduled to close Sunday.
The Lord & Taylor stores will remain open and operate as normal, until plans are made to sell the real estate either to another retailer or back to the mall owners.
