The Age (Melbourne)Judge orders Toyota to release documents
May 29, 2010 - 3:57PM
A US judge has ordered Toyota to turn over thousands of documents on its vehicles that displayed sudden unintended acceleration at a hearing for a class-action suit.
Plaintiffs' lawyers theorise the documents - estimated at 75,000 to 100,000 - could contain information indicating Toyota knew about design flaws but sold the cars anyway. Toyota has provided the documents to Congress and other US authorities.
Toyota has 30 days to turn over all English documents and up to 60 days for those in Japanese following a ruling by US District Court Judge James Selna on Friday.
The timetable for release of the documents was met with protests by Toyota lawyers, who said the schedule was too difficult to comply with.
