U.S. Vetoes U.N. Council's Yassin Measure

UNITED NATIONS (AP)--The United States vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution on Thursday condemning Israel's killing of Hamas leader Ahmed Yassin. Critics said the veto condoned Israel's policy of assassinating militant leaders.

The vote came after days of debate. The United States had demanded that the measure also condemn violence by Hamas and other militant groups, and that it identify them by name. Algeria, the resolution's sponsor, had resisted.

The resolution ``is silent about the terrorist atrocities committed by Hamas,'' U.S. Ambassador John Negroponte said before the vote. He called the measure ``unbalanced, one-sided.''

The vote was 11 countries in favor, three countries abstaining, and one country--the United States--against.

People who happened to be in the vicinity of Yassin but had never killed an Israeli had to die to get this one man? Sorry, but that kind of moral reasoning is just a bit too Bushian for me.

It also yields more retributions, and now that the U.S. has allowed Israel to escape even minimal accountability, we are more likely to be the target for some of that revenge. But that's probably not too big a deal--our history of treating Israel as the 51st state has engendered so much hatred for us in the rest of the world that a little more danger probably doesn't matter.

Israel had a chance to take down an enemy who killed hundreds and posed a constant threat. It did so as any state would do. Those who hung out with Yassin knew what a butchering, mass murdering psychopath he was and that he was on a death list.

Israel is not the 51st state. If it was, the U.S. -- under ANY modern American president -- would have pushed the Palestinians so far off the map it wouldn't be funny.

Instead, Israel does its best to both survive and remain moral, walking a tightrope that other nations would laugh at. However, no sane nation can continue to allow monsters like Yassin to prey on its civilian populace. Yassin is dead. Instead of being angry at Israel, the world should be sending them pizza.
