U.S. Consumers Brace For Fast Rising Food Prices

American consumers are bracing for more price hikes of their grocery items, as beef, milk, coffee and sugar prices have all increased in the past few months, and food companies and fastfood chains like Kellog Co. and McDonald’s Corp. announced plans to pass along some of the added cost to customers.

Retailers have been reluctant to raise prices because consumers choose to be thrifty during the economic doldrums. Americans are more willing to forego spending on luxury brands and may switch stores or brands to get the best value.

Sara Lee Corp., General Mills Inc., and Kraft Foods Inc. have also announced some price hikes on their products. Coffee giant Starbucks said that it would implement increases on its larger and premium drinks, changing its earlier stance to freeze prices.

Supermarket chains Kroger and Safeway also said that will be passing additional costs to customers.

so we'll have to turn to rats. Rat aint bad if you're starving, especially if you use enough garlic and chile. Andrew Zimmern pronounced it downright tasty after it had been boiled and then stir fried with enough aromatics.

Poor folks in the hinterlands will have more success hunting them, but the meat will be inferior, permeated with bile. Soaking overnight in milk might help, if they can afford the milk.

I was feeding ours the Fancy Feast gourmet stuff,
tried the Friskies Select Indoor and they seem to like it just as much.
It costs the same per can, but the cans are more than twice as big
(so now that's what they get).

But you know that cats can be very fussy. My previous cat would only eat the Fancy Feast grilled variety, not minced, not ground, but grilled. And only the chicken or turkey, no beef or fish. Her vet put her on prescription food, but she wouldn't touch it, so I went back to the Fancy Feast, so she would eat. And this was a kitty that I rescued from outside... Thanks, and I'll look into the Indoor Select. But Buddy has developed a preference for the Gravy Lovers, just the beef, not chicken or fish... ;)

Most vets seem to prefer the Hills, but cats don't.
There are other brands that may be more palatable.

30. Thanks! I've talked to my vet about that and you're right about the Hills

My previous vet once prescribed food for my beloved cat, but it only came in the dry. I told him that this wouldn't work, but he seemed to think I was overreacting. Well, I was right, and we had a terrible time with it. I gave her both wet and dry, but she had to have the wet, and on schedule, and made a terrific fuss. So he eventually changed her to a prescription food that came in the cans, but I still cringe when I remember what we went through. My current vet is more flexible, always has options, and is brilliant with cats, but I take my dog to him. too... :)

Cats get most of their liquid from their food - ever notice that they don't drink from their water bowls nearly as much as dogs? In the wild, raw prey gives them sufficient liquid, but indoor cats need canned/wet/raw food to make up the difference.

I'm not a vet, but we have six cats. One preferred dry food. We didn't think much of it. He now has diabetes and kidney problems. He's supposed to be on a prescription diet, but like yours, he won't touch it (neither will the others).

The vet said to look for food with a high protein count (40% for dry food - hard to find outside of the prescription stuff - Royal Canin makes one) and stay away from the gravy based canned food (made with wheat gluten, it converts to sugars in the body - a no no for a diabetic cat).
