The mother of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange says she doesn't want her son to be "hunted down and jailed", after international police organisation Interpol issued an arrest request this morning.

The Australian was added to the organisation's "wanted" list for alleged sex crimes committed in Sweden this year as his activist website continued its US diplomatic cables leaks.

Christine Assange, who lives on the Sunshine Coast, told ABC Radio she was "very distressed" about the news.

"He's my son and I love him and obviously I don't want him hunted down and jailed.

"I'm reacting as any mother would - I'm distressed," she said, adding that "a lot of stuff that's written about me and Julian is untrue" when asked about whether she had moved to Queensland from Melbourne to escape media attention.

Mr Assange is suspected of rape, sexual molestation and unlawful coercion, after an investigation by Swedish prosecutors into his encounters with two women in Sweden in August.

But if they kill or arrest him, your are right, he will become a martyr and will probably spark so much anger around the world. It certainly will prove what the documents reveal, that the U.S. is a rogue state, no better than any other brutal dictatorship.

I doubt the CIA will arrest him. They have no case against him under International or Domestic laws.

But they will use the phony rape case to try to get him tossed in jail for a long time.

He's looking more like a hero every time they threaten him. Bad strategy. He has children also, I wonder if they will intimidate the kids? They do it here in airports so why not I suspose.

He's going to make quite a bit of money, and the fools sending it in, will get nothing for it, as the U.S. has no laws under which he can be arrested. That is why they have trumped up the phony rape charges. That would not have been necessary if they had any jurisdiction over an Australian citizen who was acting legally according to International law and who owes no allegience to any country other than his own, whose laws he has NOT violated.

Edited to add: DoJ has opened an investigation and there will be multiple accessory after the fact or even conspiracy charges that might be applied to things like espionage, aiding and abetting terrorists, or even receipt of stolen property. He can't be charged with treason as he isn't a US citizen. Since US law has global territoriality, his citizenship or place of action doesn't matter. That's how charges were be brought against Steven Green for crimes in Iraq - he got life in a non-military federal court.

Assange will probably get off easy, maybe only one year per document and with time off for good behavior, he'd be out in only 200,000 years.

I hope anyone who tries from this country, gets their head handed to them. Assange is a hero in most parts of the world. I hope he is being well protected and that anyone who lays a hand on him from this country, gets arrested and thrown in jail.

Did you know that the U.S. simply cannot send their bounty hunters into other countries? Are you so insulated from the rest of the world that you actually think some American talk show host has any right to interfere in the laws of another country?

And exactly why would you support silencing these people? Do you think that even if Assange is murdered by the U.S. that the leaks will stop? He will then become a martyr for the cause of free speech and the exposure of corrupt governments everywhere, and even more people will join the effort to uncover corruption. As for arresting him, what a joke. The CIA has trumped up charges against him, he has his own lawyers, and I hope they get to the bottom of who is behind those smears. If anyone can do it, Wikileaks can.

The man is a hero to every decent person in the world. How come Democrats are on the dark side of this all of a sudden? Back in the Bush years, they would have been cheering Wikileaks, we were begging for real news. I truly hope that it is not a case of 'we must protect our team no matter what crimes they commit'. That was what we criticiized the right for, we were supposed to be different, weren't we?

Did you see what those documents revealed about Obama collaborating with Republicans to stop Spain from prosecuting Bush torturers? Stunning information. But I'm glad we know now and will no longer fall for the lies we are being told.

We owe a lot to Assange and the others who are fighting to shine a light on evil everywhere. Unless you don't think torture and the illegal slaughter of innocent people is evil?

30. I don't get how people accept these charges so readily

Even if you do not agree with him releasing these documents and think he should be charged for whatever crime that may be, how can you not be suspicious of the timing of this all? I'm not going to dismiss the charges automatically either. I mean, maybe the guy is a rapist perv, but that wouldn't be my initial instinct.
