WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange should be assassinated, a former adviser to Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Wednesday, highlighting escalating anger in the wake of a major leak of US documents.

"I think Assange should be assassinated, actually," Tom Flanagan said, speaking on Canadian television station CBC. "I think Obama should put out a contract and maybe use a drone or something."

Flanagan did not retract his remarks when asked about them later and added: "I wouldn't feel unhappy if Assange does disappear."

Meanwhile the US officials pondered possible criminal prosecutions against Assange. There have been suggestions that Assange or others involved in the leaks could be prosecuted under the US Espionage Act.

If you ask me - he is doing the job of what the MSM used to do. The reason that those in power don't like him is that he is exposing their dirty dealings.

I notice that Interpol has a warrant out for him. Interesting that it took him saying that he would be exposing a big American bank to get it to this level.

Well, no one officisl. Some DUers have, but folks have corrected them. Murder, yes. Prosecution or treason, no. Manning, however, might be eligible for prosecuted for treason.

Espionage is different from treason. I don't know how the Espionage Act reads, but some folks seem to think it covers what Assange has done.

He was a naturalized US citizen and resident of Montana when he was hanged for treason in the name of the British crown. How bad were this motherfuckers lawyers?

I mean, I am sure they could have hanged him for something... but having no allegiance to the said state is a pretty absolute defense against a treason charge. And under the laws of the time the British did recognize the idea of repudiating citizenship.

And yes, when they released disgusting video of a US helicoptor killing Afghan civilians, there was much outrage, but no calls for his death or imprisonment.

When he released thousands of embassy cables, the complaints about him escalated.
