(Rep. Barney) Frank won't vote for tax deal, predicts passage

Carrie Dann writes: Democrat Rep. Barney Frank, the chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, said Wednesday that he will not support the White House’s compromise with Republicans on tax cuts but predicted that the economic package will pass.

“No, I won’t vote for it. I don’t think that I should be coerced,” Frank said on MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell Reports.

When asked if the deal is going to pass, Frank replied “I’m afraid that it is, yes”

The Massachusetts Democrat also dinged the White House for implying that progressive Democrats who are resisting the compromise have been engaging in “political theater” over an unviable position. “We ought to be able to have honest differences of opinion without those kinds of characterizations,” he said.

But can't Nancy Pelosi simply not allow a vote on the tax deal if so many hate the deal? If so, then why not if it is so unpopular?

12. You know I am torn because I know several...

people who are absolutely hurting & to see a good friend "A MOTHER" crying because their unemployment is gone or soon to run out CRY because she can't buy just some cheap touys for her kids is very powerful!

The reason I asked is I guess I would be happy either way...But if my fellow Progressives are this upset then I would imagine Nancy Pelosi must be too...Or maybe not to the extent folks on DU are. People can be mad as hell at Obama but it is Congress that holds the true power as they control the checkbook! So, if Pelosi does have the power, and I am almost certain she does, then I wonder how many hate filled threads will make the greatest thread page if she allows a vote? My guess not a single thread in the entire site. But I would love to be wrong.

I wish Obama would allow everything to expire due to the deficit & the fact the rich do not need anymore money in their savings account! Like Warren Buffett said Trickle Down was tested for 30 year & it FAILED! But then I know unemployment will help families & it is a very effective stimulus as people will spend it.

I know everyone is having a field day bashing Obama but the man was left with so many problems & NON OF THEM have a truly correct answer or solution. And if there is a correct solution the Republicans will hold it back for politcal reasons.

And I know if Obama was to just hold his ground & allow the tax cuts to expire for everyone he would be shredded in the press!

If you are anti-Obama please don't get mad at me for just expressing my feelings. I swear I am not looking for an arguement been down that road & there is no point. Thanks for listening or reading. LOL!

13. I'm SO not anti-Obama! Initially I was with him on this because of the middle

class and those on unemployment who would be hurt if this expired -- I frankly didn't care if the rich got another deal, my main concern was for those in need.

But after hearing more viewpoints and seeing more figures, I just honestly think this will hurt us all. They talk about the stimulus plan included (don't ask me for details) and how the GDP would benefit a bit, but I don't see how that even comes close to what this will cost us. And again, if the deficit becomes greater, we will all be in even more dire straits in a couple of years, IMO.

I don't know how we can do something about the Unemployment or easing the tax burden on those who are already stretched to the max.

I AM mad at Obama for allowing it to get to this point. Again, don't know what he could have done but he's known this was coming for 10 years. Granted he had no idea (I'm guessing) of the enormity of the mess he walked into, but this issues, which has already hurt our economy so much over the years, should have been addressed earlier. But I'm still an Obama supporter, he's just currently on My List. :7

I don't know what to do, there is no magic solution, but shouldn't there be one that doesn't do such long-term damage? :shrug:

I'm not anti-Obama but the comment about the Public Option he made tell's me he is talking to Big Business, not me. So I'll just leave it at that, and withhold further comment.

9. I had to give this a lot of thought

I know the unemployment benefits will help a lot of people. But I think we can get them though framing it as a holiday gift to the unemployed. Keep them in session through Christmas and make them filibuster. Only on the rare chance that doesn't work should we even think about the compromise.

If this passes, they will not raise the debt ceiling, and the compromise will be to raise the retirement age.
It's all been part of a master plan since Raygun. Bankrupt the country, spend the Social Security Trust, then
when the economy is in ruin have no choice but to start to destroy social security and medicare,
It is a very bad deal, and our President is either in on it or too naive to see it

really hard to find ANYTHING positive about this other than helping those who are in need right now (which I admit, is a strong positive).
