Once Again US Says the End of Visas for Brazilians Is Near

In an interview with Brazil's leading weekly newsmagazine Veja, Thomas A. Shannon, the American ambassador in Brazil revealed that Washington is very interested in eliminating the need of visas for Brazilians traveling to the United States.

Nowadays Brazilians are submitted to a serious check of their economic background in order to guarantee they won't try to stay illegally in the US once their visa expires.

They also have to pay a US$ 140 fee to get the document. Brazil in retaliation charges the same amount and gives American citizens similar hard time to grant a Brazilian visa.

300,000 Brazilians apply for a Brazilian visa every year. Only China, India and Mexico have more applications. Ninety five percent of these applicants get their visa approved.

But the Brazilians reciprocated pricing their visas the same - something like $300. Plus the long flight and hours cramped inside a plane. And this was before the death ray scanners and perv gropes.

4. It's what they do in Mexico as well....

...except they DENY 95% of them. And then we wonder why they don't bother getting visas to enter the USA?

When I was a kid, we allowed Mexican nationals to cross the border...work the fields in the south, migrate north to the orchards, and return to Mexico to their families. A more stable life for all.

NOW, we restrict them from coming; and once they do get here, they are afraid to leave for fear they will never get back again.

This whole system is f*cked up. You think the Mexicans would prefer this winter to theirs?? Get serious!! I live in Mexico, and I'm very content with the climate, the pace of life, and the amenities. The only down side is the cartel actions, which always have me afraid in the back of my mind now. Crossing the border is a race, looking straight ahead...and hoping you don't get lost in the border cities. What a shame what WE have done to our neighbors to the south.

This is another ridiculous and embarrassing Bush-era holdover. HATE IT. Can't blame Brazil for retaliating with all the insulting stunts the Bush administration pulled on them.


(Good times going there in '04 with my mom, who's from there. She's a dual national; I'm not. Good times with her waiting for me during all the hoops I had to jump through--both coming and going.)

6. I love Brazil! I went to Carnaval in 2004. It was great.

The visa was a pain in the ass, but I don't remember it costing $140. I also had to do the fingerprint thing.

It would be nice if the visa was no longer needed. I would like to visit every province of Brazil some day! I have not been to Iguazu, The Pantanal, or the Brazilian part of the Amazon (Pervuian side - yes). Probably need to quit the job though to do all that!
