Spending Bill Freezes Pay for Federal Workers

Federal workers would face a two-year pay freeze under a spending bill Congress will take up this week to keep the government operating through March 4.

The bill would protect student Pell grants, veteran's benefits and a program that helps low-income families pay their heating bills. A small business loan program would be extended.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has scheduled a procedural vote on the bill for Tuesday morning. Passing the bill — known as a "continuing resolution" — would prevent the government from running out of money for daily operations Tuesday night and forcing a shutdown of most federal agencies.

I don't think they can call it a "Federal pay freeze" unless it does.

6. This has absolutely nothing to do with deficits

The capitalists can't continue to play the 'Race to the Bottom' game in private industry while state and federal worker's standard of living remains the same. In order to keep lowering private industry worker's standard of living, they need to bring down state and federal workers also.

Fat boy Christie last night showed the republican's strategy when he said no one should have pensions, everyone should have 401k plans. In other words, every American's retirement should be at the mercy of wall street gyrations and crooks.

It's really time to face the facts: Voting and protests don't work against the capitalists and their enablers (republicans and democrats). No matter who you vote in, you will be getting the short end of the stick.

those on SS did not get a COLA last year, the year before....and this coming year.
where I live....state employees are getting raises....some as much as 15%
those of us living on SS are told...we don't get a raise unless inflation raises at a rate to cause financial strain.

don't know about you folks, but the prices on things us poor people need the most...housing, food, fuel....ect
have doubled in the last 3 years.

Federal Employees have the best benefits, next to corporate Vice Presidents. I know, I lived in DC for 23 years. Folks in the private sector would take %20 paycuts just to get those benefits, especially if they have a family or a family member with an illness.

...and getting fired or laid off is NEXT TO IMPOSSIBLE.

It's short sighted to equate a Fed pay freeze with a private sector pay freeze. There's more to the total compensation than the numbers on the check.

Trust me, they will survive easier than the rest of us!

Many major corporations provide better benefits than the federal government. Starting in 1983, the federal benefits for retirement has been a small pension, 1% for every year worked, along with a 401k like account and social security. The health-care is a market of plans to choose from, most of which do not offer great dental care. Most corporate plans offer better coverage for dental and vision with similar co-pays.
