Collective bargaining is target of next Ohio Senate

State workers would lose collective-bargaining rights and local public employees, including teachers and police, would see their bargaining power weakened under legislation being drafted by a member of the Senate Republican leadership.

Gov.-elect John Kasich and Republican legislative leaders have said they plan to tackle Ohio's 27-year-old collective-bargaining law next session, and Sen. Shannon Jones, R-Springboro, said she will get the debate started quickly.

Allowing state workers to unionize "hamstrings us in our ability to manage our costs," Jones said. Eliminating collective bargaining "means we can start having real discussions about merit. People should be paid and promoted based on merit."

Jones said that although she is open to ending collective bargaining at the local level, for now she would keep it and push for changes. She would make binding arbitration less binding and allow fact-finders to give greater weight to certain information, particularly the ability of a school district or municipality to pay for a contract without additional taxes.

The Democrats in Ohio are more than happy to demonize and torture the Republicans in this state for the next two years but we're going to need some money.

This state is critical for 2012 and Kasich is a super asshole. We'll need help. I hope the DNC understands that and starts this project early next year.

17. Born and raised in Ohio. I can tell you, a lot of union guys there see

the unions as another form of gubmint and their dues as taxes. They think they lose their money and that they get nothing in return.

They actually believe that their paid so well because their bosses value their work and see them as hardworking individuals, rather than the unions have always had their back.
