UN looking into WikiLeaks suspect's (Pfc. Bradley Manning) treatment

HAGERSTOWN, Md. -- The United Nations says it is looking into a complaint that the Army private suspected of giving classified documents to WikiLeaks has been mistreated in custody.

The UN office for torture issues in Geneva said Wednesday it received a complaint from one of Pfc. Bradley Manning's supporters alleging that conditions in a Marine Corps brig in Quantico, Va., amount to torture. Visitors say he spends at least 23 hours a day alone in a cell.

The Pentagon has denied mistreating Manning. A Marine Corps spokesman says the military is keeping Manning safe, secure and ready for trial.

The UN could ask the United States to stop any violations it finds.

charges or counts against him? And since it is the military I am assuming that it's different on how they do these things. I'm sorry to be so clueless about his case but I missed how he came into all of this.

10. He went to his CO with evidence of a human rights violation

and was told to STFU. Then, he decided to go around. He allegedly downloaded material and dropped it to Wikileaks anonymously. He was caught when he was in a chat with a hacker named Lamo, who presented himself to Brad as a journalist. Lamo at some point contacted the FBI, iirc, and handed the chat transcript over to them.

4. Thank goodness there is a watchdog looking over U.S. wrong-doing.

As Michael Moore pointed out on Rachel's show last night, Bradley was doing what the Nuremberg Trials told us we should do: speak out against atrocities. Yes, military personnel are given orders & strict guidelines to follow for good reason, but when the purpose is ill gain, there's a moral obligation to speak out.

Sure they are! Safe and secure could apply to keeping him locked in a wooden box. Wouldn't put it past them. Based on the US Military's track record, he's probably being waterboarded. Someone needs to be able to see and talk with him.
