Muammar Gaddafi condemns Tunisia uprising

The Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi, has condemned the uprising in neighbouring Tunisia amid reports today of unrest on the streets of Libya.

In a speech last night Gaddafi, an ally of the ousted president, Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali, said he was "pained" by the fall of the Tunisian government. He claimed protesters had been led astray by WikiLeaks disclosures detailing the corruption in Ben Ali's family and his repressive regime.

The leaked cables were written by "ambassadors in order to create chaos", Deutsche Press-Agentur reported Gaddafi as saying.

His remarks came as Tunisian politicians hold talks to form a unity government to help maintain a fragile calm two days after violent protests forced Ben Ali from office.

There was an interesting comment this morning by an activist. I was half asleep, so I don't remember the show or the time, but I think it was on RT.

Regardless, he credits the rise of actual Democracy in South America with the fact that our illegal wars have kept the "Eye of Sauron" occupied/distracted.

Just thought it was worth noting.

May Democracy spread to the north and, eventually, around the world.

6. His comment is absurd

How can cables, intended to be for the State department's eyes only, have been written to sow discord? There have been articles in places like the NYT for decades. The government was said to be corrupt and to have not allowed elections, knowing they would lose. The dilemma was that the likely winner of an election would have been a radical Islamic regime.

Not a wonderful choice for the US. Should they have pushed for elections - as they did in Gaza, at a point where it was clear that Hamas would win? This really is a case where I really have no idea what a good policy would have been.

This does show why Wikileaks might not be all for the good. Here, the leaks - inadvertently - inserted the US into their politics. It is not clear where this will lead. The government that fell was by all accounts corrupt, but only time will tell what this coup will bring.
