BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Six more U.S. soldiers have been killed in action in Iraq (news - web sites), according to the latest casualty toll issued by the Pentagon (news - web sites) on Friday.

The toll put the number of U.S. soldiers killed in action since the start of the war at 455. Previously, 449 U.S. soldiers had been known to have been killed in action in Iraq.

14. This is a very strange manner of reporting

The sole support for this report is an increase in the numbers of KIA released by the Pentagon. So, basically, some reporter looked at the figures through yesterday, then looked at the figures released today, and reported the difference. CENTCOM only reported 2 KIA today, so that leaves 4 unaccounted for.

Now, the very strange part is this: Why can't the REUTERS reporter simply call up the press person at CENTCOM who released the new numbers and ask that person to clarify? Why is the report based solely on the released numbers, with no other information or confirmation.

What a bizarre journalistic practice.

Previous to these recent events, I had only thought of each dying American soldier as the utter tragic event that it in fact is/was.

As the casualties mount now, though, I can't help but wonder if we need to start worrying about losing a significant number of our forces there, i.e. depletion of the ranks...we only have 150,000 there right? How many losses does it take to cause disorganization and inefficiency and then even more losses?

This is just more and more frightening by the day...

...meaning wounded to the point of being taken out of action, psychological distress, etc... In any case, they are out of action.

That's about 2 divisions worth of 'ground troops'.

IIRC, we have about 8-10 divisions or so left.

17. Typically units have to sustain 20-25% casualties to be rendered

ineffective. One thing we haven't seen lately is the wounded total which I think might be enormous. Also, there are the non-combat evacuations that have been substantial, so I don't know what the real story is.

country, jungle, where armored transport couldn't travel. Because our dead children would be in the 7000 range by now. And if it wasn't for the great design of the kevlar clothing and vests and helmets our children are wearing, the dead total would be in the 70,000 plus by now. Despite all our high tech weapons and communications hardware.
