For House Speaker Boehner at commencement address, scrutiny of Catholic charity

Katy Jamison strode toward her graduation from Catholic University on Saturday wearing the requisite black robe and mortar board — plus a neon green message to House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio).

"Where’s the compassion, Mr. Boehner?” said the 8-by-10-inch sign pinned to her chest.

Jamison, 26, said Boehner, the keynote speaker at Catholic’s graduation and recipient of an honorary law doctorate, had cut too much in the federal budget aimed at protecting the poor. Doing so defied the Catholic church’s teachings, she said, and will hurt the people she hopes to help with her newly minted master’s degree in social work.

“His policies reflect different values than the values of social work professionals, which are to help people who are poor, vulnerable and repressed,” Jamison said.

Congratulations to students at Catholic University for actually demanding that GOP politicians who play to them do not ignore the parts of the bible discussing how Jesus ministered to the poor. The corporate media and corporate evangelicals have re-written the gospel to preserve those in power when the actual bible tells a story of a Christ who ministered to the oppress. Remember Glenn Beck's rant against liberation theologians as socialists?

There are some Christians who do not conveniently ignore the huge portions of the Bible dedicated to social justice. The bible does not mention abortion, but it sure does mention the need to care for the poor and needy.

The GOP has pushed Free Trade Policies and certainly
refrained from managing them in such a way as to yes,

Family Values are things like honor, love, respect, honesty, faithfulness, loyalty. These kinds of things are VALUES. Nuclear families, heterosexual marriage -- these reflect family STRUCTURES. Conservatives often conflate the two.

Bill clinton told us that there were (are?) clauses in NAFTA (I would suppose all (?) of the "free trade agreements", that allows us to negotiate for more Fair trade. He also said that if the agreements were not beneficial to Americans (all Americans, I would think) that we could legally withdraw from these treaties.

Legally or not, it doesn't matter. Look at the Kyoto treaty. "We proposed it, yet because it interfered with the polluting of the wealthy corporations, we refused to sign it.

We, as "regular Americans" (not wealthy) must UNITE and demand the same kind of consideration from OUR government as the "top 2%" get. WE are the Majority here. Let's Demand OUR RIGHTS.

I suspect that what these two economists are doing is further proof of an increasing number of Religious Right giving religious cover for a very secular economic agenda. This is beyond convergence, as we have seen by the actions of Religious Right activists such as Robert P. George and Opus Dei convert CNBC cable host Larry Kudlow. It is being deliberately pursued. They are increasingly converging to destroy the very tools of wealth creation for the poor and working class: Keynesian economics and labor unions.

Indeed the gradual abandonment of Dispensationalism could have resulted in a shift to a more progressive theology and the emerging movement does look and sound quite different from the previous white, male-dominated Fundamentalism. However, the leadership of this multi-cultural movement with its women Apostles and Prophets and focus on societal "transformation" has not embraced the social gospel, but a full blown Dominionist or "Kingdom Now" theology that is sweeping the globe and impacting churches across the spectrum of Christianity.

What is "Dominionism" in this context? It is a word that has been used casually to mean many different things in recent years, including being used erroneously in reference to Dispensationalists, whose well-defined prophecy timeline includes no plan whatsoever for taking dominion over the earth. One of the major features of Dispensationalism is a pre-Tribulation Rapture, therefore "born again" Christians will not still be present on the natural earth when the battles of the end times take place. They will then watch from the grandstands of heaven and play no role in the defeat of Satan and his minions.

Dominionism is a term that should only be used for those whose eschatological timeline requires that Christians, in some way, gain complete authority over the earth before the return of Jesus can take place. This can refer to some postmillennial theologies or forms of premillennial theology in which Christians are not Raptured prior to the Tribulation. The term Dominionism should not be used to describe pre-Tribulation Dispensational theology.
