Clinton on Syria: 'additional steps in days ahead'

WASHINGTON (AFP) – The United States and the European Union said the international community will within days take further steps against Syria over its deadly crackdown on pro-democracy protests.

"We will be taking additional steps in the days ahead," US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told reporters when asked if recent events raised the bar for taking Syria to the international court or the UN Security Council.

Standing next to Clinton, European Union diplomacy chief Catherine Ashton said "on Syria, I'm very worried about what's happened in the last few days," adding she was also worried about events last week.

The number of people killed or detained "is extremely alarming," she said.
