Mexico reporter, his son and wife shot to death

VERACRUZ, Mexico — A journalist, his wife, and their 21-year-old son were shot to death inside their home in this Gulf coast city Monday, authorities said.

Journalist Miguel Angel Lopez Velasco and his family were shot with a 9 mm handgun, said Veracruz state prosecutor Jorge Yunis.

Lopez Velasco wrote a column about politics and crime and was editorial director for the daily newspaper Notiver. His son had been working as a photographer for the same newspaper.

Yunis said investigators haven't determined a motive in the killings and no one has been arrested.

...I believe the cartels would still be killing each other and innocents over territory and the opportunity to import 'legal' drugs. The situation is too far gone. The Mexican government is still too ineffective and in some cases, corrupt. The Cartels will not just hand over the business to the government to be regulated, taxed etc. I'm not saying that I'm against legalizing certain 'soft' recreational drugs, I'm just saying that suddenly legalizing them wouldn't curtail the violence. Then there's the issue of the cartels' move into human trafficking... and should all 'illegal' drugs be made legal? Heroin? Cocaine? Meth? This is a complex issue, as I'm sure you are all aware, and I don't pretend to have the answers. But, I do have a lot of questions...

Exactly a point I was trying to make. I mentioned the human trafficking. The violence will not stop simply by legalizing 'illegal' drugs. It seems here that is what the consensus believes will solve the problem. I don't believe so.
