House GOP still short on votes (4:08 PM)

House Republican leaders are still looking for the votes to pass Speaker John Boehner's (R-Ohio) debt-limit bill.

Boehner and his lieutenants are publicly expressing confidence, but their actions clearly show that they are still rounding up support. Boehner on Thursday afternoon was seen lobbying members, seeking “yes” votes in what is the biggest vote of his Speakership.

There are 22 House Republicans who will vote no or are leaning no, according to The Hill’s whip count. There are more than three dozen Republicans who are publicly undecided, and 12 of them said or suggested on Thursday that they are still on the fence.

Boehner and his top lieutenants were scrambling for votes Thursday in anticipation of this evening’s vote, expected at around 6 p.m.

Some people here seem to be hoping for a failure by the House to pass this. My view is that a failure by Boehner to deliver votes on a "compromise" (or at least a starting point for negotiaiton with the Senate) will spook the markets tomorrow morning.

In the 80's I remember the Senate trying to get enough Senators in the Chamber to vote on something. Orrin Hatch (UT) didn't like the content of what the Democratic majority was trying to get a vote on (the word cloture comes to mind). Hatch went to hide in his office, and barricaded the door with furniture. The Cops were notified and they went and practically dragged him to the Chamber.

Have been looking for something about this online; no luck so far.

I think the markets have failure built in at this point. The bill isn't seen by many as a compromise starter, Bohner hasn't even talked to the Democrats in the House.

They obliterated the 15 minute time limit and kept the roll call open for over 3 hours.

DeLay, Blunt and Boehner took members into a back room and did God only knows what to them to clear 218.

10. I'm sure the markets know this is all for show

and that it's dead on arrival in the Senate. Plus, the "markets" already said it's not enough to not stop a down grade in rating whereas the Reid plan is good enough.

No compromise there at all and never ever has been from Him and his Hobbits..
Nothing at all changed that today either...
Boehner Head thinks his Party runs this show and screw everybody doing it...
And to add insult to injury... His Bill is way short of the Deficit reduction he set for the Dems.

People who sit in them get more and more reluctant to lose them in the next election.
